Locality

If you stand on top of Foel Cwmcerwyn, the highest peak of the Preselli Mountains, on a clear day you can see Ireland, Devon and every county in Wales with the exception of Anglesey and Monmouthshire. as well as nearly every part of Pembrokeshire.

No county in South Wales rivals Pembrokeshire in the number and variety of its castles. In all more than fifty were built during the medieval period, not to mention diverse ecclesiastical fortifications, fortified manor-houses and the many church towers predominant in the south, virtually each one of which was a stronghold providing a place of refuge and resistance against attack.

Lamphey was once a luxurious country retreat for the Bishop of St. David's. A place of retirment and leisure for the bishops, was provided with gardens, orchards, fishponds, water-mills, a dovecot and a deer park. In 1644 the palace was garrisoned for Parliament and may well have suffered some damage. In any event, it was occupied no longer and fell into decay.
