Details: Old Oak Barn offers unique self catering accommodation for 4 or 5 in a secluded woodland valley and is situated in West Carmarthenshire near the Pembrokeshire border only 5-10 minutes from the A40 & St Clears. The barn was renovated and restored in 2004/05 to provide a very high standard of accommodation - even luxury self catering accommodation. The main features are a very spacious south facing stone patio adjoining the building as well as the interior with plain white walls and wooden features many of which came from trees grown in Cwmpalis Woods. Underfloor heating provides an especially comfortable warmth all year round and enables the beautifully handcrafted alder floor to be seen at its very best. We offer very child friendly accommodation and for our visitors who may be allergic we have decided strictly no pets. Open all year round for holidays and short breaks!

The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped and contains all you may need for your holiday or short break. The two bedrooms are simply furnished and are adjacent to the spacious main living room which measures 6 x 5 mt. Travel cot or camp bed can be used to sleep 5. We welcome those wanting a short break out of the main holiday season - minimum of 2 nights. We also welcome children. This part of Carmarthen is popular for holidays in Wales and is easily accessible from the M4 being approximately 90 minutes from the Severn Bridge - on a good run! Informal gardens with small swings for children plus 2 more much bigger swings in the woods are very popular. Primroses now out - March 2008! Covered in snow April 6th!

We have installed broadband wireless internet access at Old Oak Barn - so if you want to check emails and log on, then provided you bring your own laptop there should be no problem. We provide this service free of any extra charge and guests who use it find the connection speedy and reliable.

We are only a short drive from many well known and beautiful parts of West Wales which include the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and National Park. Oakwood Park is only 30 minutes away. Tenby, Laugharne, Saundersfoot and Caldey Island also nearby. Badgers can often be seen in our own woods. Location and Wildlife
Old Oak Barn is situated on our 72 acre farm "Cwmpalis". We are 2 miles from Meidrim village and 3 miles from St Clears which is on the A40 10 miles west of Carmarthen and approx 6 miles north of Laugharne of Dylan Thomas fame. Also near Tenby, with its colourful painted houses, the famous Pendine sands, as well as Saudersfoot, Amroth and Llanstephan. Our little log chalet, built many years ago, in our woods can be used if required.

The local area is well known for its green pastures and wooded valleys as well as ancient castles and beautiful sandy beaches. The two main rivers in the county are the Teifi and the Tywi and coracles can still be seen on both. We are only 30 minutes from the Presellis. This part of Wales is steeped in history and visitors may want to visit Llaugharne where Dylan Thomas lived. Laugharne castle is only a short drive from Old Oak Barn. The beautiful coastline of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire is easily accessible for day trips.

Perhaps the best time to stay is during April and May when the spring birds are at their most vocal. Bluebells adorn our woods and walking locally is at its best. Without doubt what we enjoy most about the area is the sea including the Pembrokeshire coast, the island of Skomer with its puffins, the wonderful beaches, the coastal walks and the magnificent variety of birdlife.

Two pairs of long tailed tits were spotted in January 2008, in a tree making wonderful noises now the rain has gone - also spotted blue tits flying in and out of the nesting box by the barn!

April 2008 Greylag Goose is nesting again and this year a pair of Canada Geese are also around.

A lot of the wood used in Old Oak Barn came from our own woods which are managed in a fully sustainable way. Jerry did all the harvesting and preparation himself and the time scale from living trees to being fully in use in the barn was only a matter of months. Wherever possible other building materials used were sourced locally eg stone from our own small quarry here at Cwmpalis and recycled slates from St Clears.

Renovating the barn
When we moved to Cwmpalis in 1988 Old Oak Barn was being used to milk a small dairy herd. What is now the kitchen and bathroom overlooking the stream at the back of the property was a small loose box used for winter housing for calves. We used it as a chicken shed (flock of 10!!) for many years. The original building is stone and was built at the turn of last century. Planning control allowed us to put in one large window at the gable end plus four velux roof windows but all other windows are in the original positions. Being unusual sizes we had wooden windows made and have tried to keep to the original design as much as possible. Cast iron door and window fastners add character and look good!

The rebuilding of the barn began in April 2004 after a full year's delay obtaining planning permission. We did a lot of the work ourselves but were fortunate to obtain a first class stonemason who lives locally and the entire patio was completely rebuilt using original stone from the demolition of the old stone wall which was unsafe. In addition we employed local roofers, plasterers, a plumber and electrician.

We had to install a new water system from the well. Testing of the water proves its excellent quality. We are sure you will appreciate most of all the secluded location of the barn which now offers you the opportunity to take a holiday in a very peaceful part of Wales. What was a unique building has now been renovated and transformed to very high standard and spacious self catering accommodation. Internet access is available free of extra charge - bring your own laptop.
