The Castle

Known locally as 'the Castle' but officially named the 'Castle Hotel' the premises is best described as a sea side pub. The Castle Hotel was first opened at lunch time on Monday 2nd of January 1871. A ticket survives of the invitation to inaugural lunch given to commemorate the opening.

In those days any licensed premises which could offer bed and board would prefer to be known as a 'hotel' whereas nowadays we tend to imagine fairly large establishments as hotels. The Castle would probably have opened on the 1st of January, however the day that year was a Sunday when opening of the bars was forbidden in Wales.

Details: Welcome to Little Haven...

Little Haven is a village clustered around an inlet in the Southern quarter of St. Brides Bay in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The village is situated centrally within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, this is the only coastal National Park in the United Kingdom. The village originally developed by virtue of its sheltered sandy beach, which enabled coastal trading vessels to lay on the beach to unload and load cargo.

The principle trade being in the import of lime for farm and building requirements and the export of coal that was extracted from small drift mines in the adjacent cliffs and the banks behind the villages of Little Haven and Broad Haven.

With the decline in the viability of small scale mining the village became a holiday venue at least 100 years ago and has remained a much sought after location as a holiday base ever since.

Eating at the Castle
The food available at The Castle is wide ranging and encompasses most tastes, palates and pockets.
The basic menu provides traditional steaks, fish & Chips, burgers, grills, pies etc and at lunch time offers sandwich platters, ploughman's and during the winter, our home made Cawl - a traditional Welsh soup/stew.

There is also an extensive 'Specials' board available lunch times and evenings, at the same price throughout the bar and dining room areas. This provides for a range of fish and speciality dishes available seasonally e.g. locally caught fish, crab, lobster and Chef's own dishes prepared for the day.

Seafood is a particular speciality of ours and we often have as many as a dozen varieties of fish and shellfish available to eat, much of it caught locally in St Brides Bay or out of Milford Haven.

It is a policy of ours to use local produce and suppliers wherever possible and we feel that this is reflected in the quality of the meals that we cook.

Our cheese, meats and much of our seafood originate in the County of Pembrokeshire, meaning the environmental impact of distribution are significantly reduced and that we are supporting our local economy.

The Chef
Fred the Chef has been a chef for longer than he's prepared to admit.

He first started serving up food on the 12th April 2001 when 'The Castle' re-opened after receiving a complete refurbishment.

Fred is very experienced bistro chef and the dishes on the menu are mainly his own creations.

He enjoys catering for awkward customers and has been known to create steam puddings and vegetarian dishes at the drop of a hat.

Fred always rises to a challenge. He loves to produce individual menus for special occasions, so please ask.

Fred is assisted by Ann and Gareth.

Drinking at the Castle
Beers, Wines & Spirits:
Like our Food Menu our range of drinks is designed to suit most tastes. We carry all the usual range of beers and stouts that you would expect to see, and are proud of our real ales, all of which are brewed in Wales.

We also believe that our Wine List offers something a little bit different, we are supplied by the Independent Wine Buyers Consortium (IWBC), this means that our range of wines is not available to buy through supermarket chains or cash and carry outlets.

All of this means that we keep a different range of wines to the average pub and that we sell to you for a very reasonable price.

As well as Beers, Wines and Spirits our bar staff will be happy to mix you a cocktail or just brew up some fresh coffee.

Facilities
The Castle provides a range of facilities that cater for most tastes. Although now open plan, the bar still separates into the Back Bar, usually frequented by the locals and the Lounge Bar which provides seating for meals in the early evening.

We also have a separate dining room that can provide a more private setting, if desired. Adjoining the Back Bar is the poolroom where the pool team occasionally hone their skills, ready for league competition.

To the front of the building, overlooking the sea is the terrace, which is used for eating and drinking from May to September when the weather is at its best.

Disabled Access
Access into the premises can be obtained through both the front and the back door.

The back porch is entered via a ramp and the front door has two small (1 inch) steps.

The bar area itself is open plan, so there is plenty of room to move.

The toilets are accessed via a ramp.

While we do not have a disabled toilet there is one a short distance away between The Castle and the village car park.
