Restaurant:
The Grove Restaurant serves modern country food using locally sourced food, immaculately prepared but simply presented. Each month our Chef Emilio designs an exciting lunch and dinner menu using the best meats and vegetables of the season.
From spring 2010, our Pat McGrath will begin to produce vegetables from The Grove’s kitchen garden for the first time. Resourceful Pat will also be building a smoke house so that we can smoke our own fish and meats on site.
Come and enjoy great food, warming log fires and flickering candles in the restaurant and lounge bar soon!
History:
The intriguing history of The Grove can be traced right back to the 15th century. The dwelling which originally occupied this site is believed to be a "Ty Hir", a 15th century long house. This building survives, standing just apart from the main mansion house. This solidly built, two-storey long house would have housed not only the owners but their livestock too.
Between the main house and the Long House stands the Coach House. This was almost certainly used as a tannery by the Poyer family who owned the Grove in the 1700s. The property passed through many generations of this family until Anne Poyer Callen died in 1808, bequeathing the Grove to her husband, William Callen of Merrixton. The house was unoccupied as a family home for many years, until an heiress of the Callens bought it for her husband, J. L. G. P. Lewis of the Henllan estate at nearby Llanddewi Velfrey. He extended the Georgian L-shaped house in the late 19th Century, adding the hall, staircase, lounge, master bedroom and the library on the first floor landing. This enlargement was designed by the notable architect, John Pollard Seddon, in the neo-gothic Victorian style, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, which is still very much in evidence today.
Gardens:
The Grove occupies a small hollow on a hillside with stunning views of Narberth and the Preselli Hills. Its unique natural location is beautifully framed by wonderful ancient oaks and beech trees. Since September 2007, we have been working hard to restore this magnificent house and its wonderful gardens, back to its earlier glory.
The gardens offer a beautiful display of colour throughout the year. In early spring, we are minded of our towering copper beeches and the crocuses and daffodils line our driveway and streams. These soon make way to a carpet of bluebells in a sweeping meadow from our cottages to the lawn of the main house. As the move into summer our huge rhododendrons and flower borders blaze into colour. Outside the traditional geometric lines of the house flower borders and it’s terracing, are natural wild flower meadows and streams for you to enjoy.
In the spring, we aim to start the restoration of our Georgian Walled Garden. With the help of our Architect Peter Holden and our Garden Designer Cheryl Cummings we aim to transform this space into a unique place for all to relax and contemplate. The proposed design embraces local varieties of orchard trees sitting in large swathes of lavender lining our pathways to orderly patches of lawn, seating areas and a traditional summerhouse.
The Local Area:
Whether you want to explore the stunning coastal walking, its sandy beaches, picturesque bays and pretty harbour villages, or wander around the many boutiques and galleries of Narberth, we are perfectly located. For those wishing to explore closer to the house there are plenty of walks and bridleways with various points of interest all waiting to be discovered; a deserted Welsh chapel, an ancient settlement perched on the hill and Canaston woods. Locally you can also find fabulous mountain biking trails, fishing, sailing, surfing, riding and the high-adrenaline sport of coasteering to mention just a few.
