Details: About 5 miles West of Porthcawl, on the road to Port Talbot lies the village of Margam. The jewel in the crown is Margam Country Park which comprises 850 acres of undulating parkland, including a mountain range and beautifully manicured gardens. The Country Park is a lovely place to visit or to take refreshing walk. Entry to the Park itself is usually free (please call ahead to check that there isn't a special event on that may be subject to a charge), although parking costs £3.00 for a car.

Margam Country Park is often used for weddings and for events, with a number of music stars such as Katherine Jenkins (the famous Welsh classical singer), being recent performers. Click here for the Margam Park Website or call +44 (01639) 881635.

Inland, to the East of Margam Country Park (about 10 miles North East of Porthcawl) is Park Slip Nature Park at Aberkenfig, the Headquarters of the Glamorgan Wildlife Trust and a good location for bird watching. The reserve is located in oak forestry, alongside Park Pond.Click here for the Welsh Wildlife Trust Website

Further North, to the East of Port Talbot and Margam, (about 15 miles north of Porthcawl) is the Afan Forest Park. This Park comprises a vale of woodland, moorland and streams. There is also an Iron Age Fort. Afan Forest Park is an excellent place for Walks and picnics with walking trails starting from the Countryside Centre, which houses the Welsh Miners’ Museum, complete with equipment used down the pits and a recreated coal face. It is also an excellent place for mountain biking being the only UK trail to feature in the What Mountain Bike Magazine 10 best places to ride before you die. Click here for the Afan Forest Park Website

Nearby is the L & A Outdoor Centre where you can try activities such as horse riding, mountain biking, abseiling etc.. It is a great venue for groups and families.
