Brief History of Saundersfoot Saundersfoot originally built up around the coal and anthracite industries during the 18th century, shipping coal from numerous local collieries, as well as iron ore, as far away as Scandinavia. As industrial activity increased, the village grew. At the same time summer visitor numbers began to increase and hotels were built to accommodate holiday makers. Unfortunately by the end of 1939 all the local pits had closed, mainly due to the difficulty of working the local seams, and coal mining in the area came to an end. Luckily, visitors provided some much needed impetus to the local economy and today Saundersfoot is a thriving holiday destination. Geography of Saundersfoot The south east facing beach at Saundersfoot is one of the most popular stretches of coast in Pembrokeshire. Located at the foot of a pretty wooded valley, with a charming harbour, Saundersfoot also offers easy access to Amroth where the 186 mile coastal path starts (or ends!). Events in Saundersfoot During the summer months there is plenty going on, however, it is worth mentioning that throughout the winter, it is a lovely resort with large stretches of beach and mild weather that make for a lovely winter break. On the 1st January every year, thousands of spectator’s gather to watch the New Year’s Day swim. In 2007 over 700 locals braved the elements to raise money for charity. In total they raised over £175,000! In its 23rd year, the swim began to rival one held at Tenby on Boxing Day. Activities in Saundersfoot Walk on Water offers power kites, traction kites, stunt kites, kite boards, mountain boards, buggies and kayaks. They are located at: 1 The Strand, Saundersfoot. Lessons are also available. Tel: 01834 813862 or 01834 831227. Wining & Dining in Saundersfoot Saundersfoot has plenty of restaurants and cafés to cater for even the most discerning palate. For Chinese, try the Sao Mai Golden Dragon at 2 Brewery Terrace, tel: 01834 813615. Fish and Chips at The Mermaid on the Strand are a real treat, with beer batter and a large selection of fish. 1 The Strand, tel: 01834 811873. Excellent steaks and friendly service are on offer at Kook A Ba at Norland House, tel: 01834 813814. It is well worth venturing a little further a field, half a mile north of Saundersfoot is Wiseman’s bridge, home to the charming Wiseman’s Bridge Inn. Situated on the beach, the Inn has superb views over the bay and an unrivalled location. Additionally, they serve excellent food and drink. A range of accommodation is on offer here, including Bed and Breakfast, self catering apartments, caravans and tents! For a special occasion try the culinary delights at one of the restaurants at The St Bride's Hotel and Spa. At The Cliff Restaurant sample fine dining with fantastic views over the bay. The Gallery Restaurant offers more casual dining in a more relaxed atmosphere and the bar is open all day.
